Closed again!
The pub was closed for 9 months after being seriously damaged by flood
water in autumn 2012, then re-opened in 2013.
However, it has not been succesful and is once again closed. In 04/2015 I have
heard that it has been sold - but to be a pub or a house?
------------------------------------------------------------
This 17thC. building dates from before the Leek road and the Macclesfield
Canal were built in the early 19thC. Located only yards from the canal,
this is a very popular overnight stop for boaters.
The name is thought to originate from the last jester, or fool, in a stately home, namely nearby Gawsworth Hall. Samuel 'Maggoty' Johnson possibly took his ale in a corner, or nook, within this pub! Maggoty is a famed local character and he is buried up at Gawsworth.
